More than 30 student-made businesses gathered in the Chanute High School commons November 9 for the annual business showcase. Students presented an array of creative ideas including handmade ornaments, plushies, soaps, and treats.
The competition serves as the focal point for the high school’s Introduction to Business class. Students are tasked with building and fine tuning a business preceding the final showing to the public.
A panel of judges selected from the local community are then asked to evaluate the students’ businesses based on a criteria of creativity, presentation, and extemporaneous speaking.
Freshman Autumn Waggoner won first place and the top prize of $400 with her bracelet and wristlet business called Bling. She will automatically qualify for the state competition held in Manhattan in April.
When asked about the steps she took in creating her business, Waggoner responded, “I started my small business in February when I had spare time and wanted to be creative. Since then I’ve turned this spare time project into a growing business.”
Freshman Bailey Brecheneisen finished second with her business Yarn Yards, nabbing a prize of $200. Sophomore Aiden Catterson took third place and a $100 prize for his Christmas ornament business.
